The Maya Site of Copan Ruinás is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites of the ancient Maya civilization and was declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1980. Located in a majestic landscape in western Honduras, the city saw Maya sculpture reach its highest artistic expression.

The first humans to settle in the Copan Valley arrived around 1500 BC and are thought to have had links to Southern Mexico.
